Infection: Online on temporary hold

Posted in Project Reports on October 9th, 2008 by That Namelezz Guy

We’ve (unfortunately) encountered a problem with the game’s Python-based networking system and have to put it on hold till this flaw is fixed. It prevents us from refreshing server content, resulting in mangled client - server interaction (read: zombies aren’t moving).

However, we’ve saved a small piece of a treat for you - a demonstration from back at January 2008!

The player graphics aren’t yet done (they’ll be customizable) but it gives you a nice glimpse of the zombie AI (now way more improved) that has flanking and all that jazz.

Technical side of the tracks

We’ve added a few things lately:

- Breakable doors! You can now shoot at doors with a firearm to make holes that you can use to kill zombies from afar.

-  The flamethrower. First particle-based weapon and a very sparsely available one at that! Petrol must be harvested from gas stations, canisters and abandoned vehicles in order to use this weapon.

- Dynamic shadows! Based on light sources. Not too hard on the FPS either!

I’ll give it a week for another update with in-game screenshots. Stay tuned!

Artwork & Graphical Goodness: Pt. 1

Posted in Project Reports on May 31st, 2008 by That Namelezz Guy

Yo! Long time no see, Namelezz back here after a long pause. We’ve been mainly focusing on artwork and private beta testing right now. The list of new artwork is enormous!

Here’s some treats for you:

The logo you’ve grown love to hate (in the process of redesigning it but felt like it should be included anyway)

Identification badges:

In-game chat taunts:

Some GUI work (still thinking whether to put this in or not):

Be on the look out for part two, where we show you some more in-game graphical features, and who knows, maybe even a screenshot from the game itself!

Blog Launched!

Posted in Project Reports on April 10th, 2008 by That Namelezz Guy

Hello, my name is Namelezz. I’m part of the Toxic Milk Interactive game development team. Today I’m gonna show you what’s this game about.

First of all, imagine the first Grand Theft Auto games, the topdown 2D ones. Remember how they captured a real city in a topdown environment?

GTA 2

Now add zombies to this place, an inventory system, three massive continents and massive multiplayer, groups, chat system and much much more and you get Infection: Online, the game we are developing.

There’s much progress done already; the base networking is done, the website is up and forums are going to open soon…not only that, as you are probably one of the first to read this development blog I’ll give you a special gift later in this post.

Infection: Online’s backstory starts when scientists claim to find a cure for mankind’s worst diseases but instead unleashe a deadly rabies virus that transfers on blood. Soon all the infected humans become aggressive murderous creatures that lay waste on all the cities of Earth…this is where the humans try to survive and fight for their homes and loved ones!

Infection: Online will feature one continent first, Staten County. It is a vast megapolis remiscent of your urban zombie scenarios, featuring lots of dead end alleys and shops to barricade and hide in. Staten County is not just one big city, it’s three interconnected cities in one.

The first city, Harlec, is an industrialistic skyline burough with lots of structural cover. There’s a whole abandoned hospital, restaurants and record shops. Here you start from The Twin Breaks Shopping Centre.

The second city, Racquet is the straight midpoint of the city. It’s main street is flooding with the undead and the soldiers are trying to take them out the best they can. This vast intersection and it’s quiet cornershops make great hiding places and there’s lots of stuff to loot and sell.

The third city in Staten County, Denesis, is rumored to be the original birthplace of the infection - the laboratories and factories located in this formerly residential area can give anyone sneaky enough the cover they need to survive.

After we have tested the game enough and people are starting to pour in and play it, we’re going to open the second large continent, Las Foridas. It’s a vast beach resort with lots of buildings to go inside.

If the game concept keeps being popular the third continent, Hollenberg will be unlocked. It’s full of farmyards and cornfields, lots of open field and cover is rare. It’s the ultimate standpoint.

So this is where I will cut this post because I’d give too many spoilers to you, sorry! But wait! I promised a gift, that’s right, a gift for your reading (or scrolling) trouble…

It’s the work in progress map of Harlec, Staten County (Click to enlarge it!)
